Wiki Education improves Wikipedia so that public knowledge is more accurate, complete, and representative.

Wikipedia is one of the world’s most influential sources of information, reaching billions of people each month through its own readership and through its growing downstream influence on AI systems trained on its content. What is represented on Wikipedia shapes how people understand the world.

Wiki Education strengthens Wikipedia by empowering students, scholars, and subject-matter experts to contribute high-quality, verifiable information. Through this work, we help close critical knowledge gaps and ensure that Wikipedia more fully reflects the people, ideas, and histories that shape society.

 

About our programs

In our flagship program, higher education instructors replace traditional assignments with the creation and improvement of Wikipedia articles. In place of writing a traditional term paper, students take on a real-world assignment that requires them to identify reliable sources, evaluate evidence, and synthesize complex information for a public audience. This creates a deeper learning experience while strengthening critical thinking skills.

Our other program empowers subject-matter experts to change Wikipedia’s narrative in their fields of expertise. Through six- to eight-week online courses and guided support, scholars, scientists, and other professionals learn how to contribute their expertise directly to Wikipedia by improving articles, refining sourcing, and adding high-quality content in their fields. This work reinforces Wikipedia’s role as a trusted resource for its readers around the world.
